Special Olympics Australia was established in 1976. It provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with an intellectual disability, regardless of their skill level. There are fourteen official sports: aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, cricket, golf, gymnastics, ice skating, sailing, soccer, softball, snow sport, tennis and tenpin bowling. Through sport, the athletes get an opportunity to get fit, develop skills, make friends and be part of a community.
